인구학에서 출생¹이란 출산²이나재생산²과 관련된 현상을 말한다. 출생률은 출생 대신 사용되기도 한다. 이러한 용어는 전체 인구 및 하위 인구의 출산³ , 엄밀하게 말하면 생존⁴ 의 발생 빈도를 나타낸다. 출산은 아이를 낳는 과정이다. 출생 또는 생존한 아이⁵ 의 출산은 산모로부터 완전히 분리된 후 아이가 보여주는 생명 증후, 예를 들어 호흡,随意筋의 움직임, 심장 박동에 의해 후기 태아 사망 ( 411-5 참조)과는 구별 된다. 일단 전 출산 수에서 후기 태아 사망을 제외한 수를 나타내는 데 사용 된 유효 출생 힘 6 이라는 용어는 유아 내지 아동 사망률이 일어나지 않는다고 가정했을 경우의 출생 힘의 의미로 사용되어야 있다. 출생 힘 격차 8 (또는 차별 출생 힘 8 ) 부분 인구 사이 출생 힘의 차이를 나타낸다.

Live births or the births of are distinguished from late foetal deaths (cf. 411-5) by evidence of life, such as respiration, movement of voluntary muscles or heartbeat of the child after complete expulsion or extraction. The term effective fertility⁶, which was once used to indicate that late foetal deaths were not counted among the total number of births, should refer to the cases in which the deaths of infants or children are excluded from consideration. The term differential fertility⁸ designates fertility differences between the subgroups of a population.

 2. 재생산 reproduction (이름); 재생산하는 reproduce (동); 재생산 reproductive (형). 재생산이라는 용어는 생식 procreation 과정보다는 (§ 711를 쓰는대로) 출생과 사망의 균형을 나타내는 경우가 많다.  3. 출산 birth라는 용어는 지금은 출생을 의미하는 것이 보통.  4. 살아 태어난 live-born (형)은 출생 (살아 태어난 유아)의 의미에서 명사로도 사용된다.
